Water Treatment

The City of Medicine Hat’s Water Treatment Plant recently completed an expansion to meet water demand for a total service population of 75,000 customers.  Current capacity is rated at 180 ML (180 million liters)per day. Future upgrades are planned in 2014 to include a treatment facility for process wastes generated during the water treatment process.  This upgrade is essential for the long term protection of the South Saskatchewan River.

During winter months, the average plant effluent is in the range of 29 million litres per day. During summer months, this will increase to 85-120 million litres per day. The primary reason – residential irrigation. Essentially water demand in Medicine Hat becomes a function of ambient outdoor temperature and precipitation.
