Housing

Living in Medicine Hat literally makes cents. Not only do we lay claim to the most sunshine of any city in Canada, we have some of the lowest property taxes in Canada too. Competitive utility rates, reasonable housing costs and no provincial sales tax or business tax charges in Medicine Hat adds up to lots of cents.

Medicine Hat’s housing market saw a downshift in the past couple of months after several years of economic boom but experts are confident that the market will remain stable and viable and maintain a middle ground to support both buyers and sellers in the market.

New land developments are also continuing in several areas of the city although not at the frenetic pace of past years. They have slowed to a rate that is a little more stable as well and with that stability comes a chance for new development opportunities; among them chances for energy efficiency, in development and building opportunities.

The City of Medicine Hat has adopted many HAT Smart initiatives to assist developers, construction builders and home buyers in making more “green” choices in new construction and renovations including the new “Built Green” initiative currently under consideration.

See HAT Smart for information on the “Built Green” program and other initiatives such as rebate programs, conservations guides and energy efficient programs offered by the City of Medicine Hat and it’s partnerships with other organizations including the Province of Alberta.

Visit the current City of Medicine Hat Business Support Office’s Statistical Information Package for information on current housing prices and other related information or visit the Medicine Hat Real Estate Board.
