City Council on Monday evening authorized the continuation of electric meter installations in Medicine Hat.
The authorization by Council follows a recommendation by the Energy Committee on Dec. 17, 2014.
The Electric Utility will begin installing remaining meters next week. Of the 31,483 residential, commercial and industrial electric meters in the service area, 2,087 have yet to be installed.
The decision to continue installing Sensus Gen 3 iConA electric meters comes after the meters were sent to Underwriters Laboratories for testing. The meters underwent a battery of 21 safety and performance tests, complying with all of them.
Since automated meter installations began in the Medicine Hat Electric Utility service area in 2012, there have been no incidents resulting in meter failures.
Throughout the program, the meter installation process in Medicine Hat has been thorough. That process will continue and includes:
• Visually inspecting each meter socket after removing the old meter and before installing the new one;
• Addressing any potential issues identified by the visual inspection with the property owner;
• Taking a photo of each meter socket;
• Alarm notifications reported by the meter that prompts the Utility to respond
