Construction of Concrete Stairs to Enhance River Access at Strathcona Boat Launch
Medicine Hat – In order to expand recreational opportunities along the South Saskatchewan River, a set of concrete stairs will be constructed at the Strathcona Boat Launch.
The project also includes additional shoreline protection and aesthetic improvements adjacent to the boat launch.
Construction activities are scheduled to begin on Monday, August 24, 2020.
“The steps will lead residents and visitors alike down to the water, providing them an additional entry point for non-motorized flotation devices, like paddleboards and kayaks,” said Alex Ehmann, Project Engineer with the Parks & Recreation Department. “The addition of stairs will still maintain access to the motorized boat launch and complement the surrounding picnic and viewpoint areas.”
The development of recreational opportunities adjacent to the South Saskatchewan River supports City Council’s previous strategic priority that the river valley be developed as an aesthetic and recreation feature.
“This development will improve access to the river and support the redevelopment of existing infrastructure, only building on the recreational opportunities we already take advantage of,” Ehmann added.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of the 2020 construction season.
All efforts will be made to keep the boat launch open during construction. Parking in the adjacent lot will be limited in order to accommodate construction crews.
All trails throughout Strathcona Island Park will remain open during construction unless otherwise posted.
