The location of the new generation unit in the Box Springs area is strategic in nature. Located away from the power plant, it will operate on a separate supply of natural gas. This meets the Alberta Utilities Commission guidelines for electrical generation capability for municipalities.

Unit 16 adds 43 megawatts to the City’s power supply, for a total of 246 MW. If the current largest unit goes offline, this will ensure sufficient power supply is available.
