The Environmental Utilities (EU) Department operates the Water, Sewer and Solid Waste Utilities by providing safe, reliable and effective utility services to the community. The department is structured into six areas including:
The Water Treatment Plant produces safe potable water for the community and some parts of the surrounding county by treating raw water provided by the South Saskatchewan River. The Wastewater Treatment Plant treats sewage from the community and Redcliff prior to discharging the treated effluent back into the river.
Further divided into the Construction and Maintenance teams; Field Operations oversees the water distribution and wastewater collection systems. This includes the operation and maintenance of over 830+km of underground mains; 1900+ City fire hydrants; 59,000m3 of treated water storage and 24 pump stations. Their operations also include, but is not limited to, customer service requests, water quality monitoring, meter installation, sewer service cleaning, underground line locates and development compliance inspections.
Source Control Operations
The Source Control group’s focus is the management of the potable water cross connection control and wastewater source control programs for the protection of the environment as well as City infrastructure including the water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
The Engineering staff provides strategic and technical support to all operational areas within Environmental Utilities as well as provides reviews and analysis of municipal growth, development and rehabilitation proposals.
Administration and Technical Support
Commonly referred to as “EU Admin”, the group develops and distributes information regarding department programs, products and services as well as responds to public inquiries and dispatches customer service requests. They provide extensive administrative support to all department staff within five separate facilities and are also responsible for maintaining three utility customer groups including water, sewer, solid waste collection and recycling accounts.
