The Water Utility, one of three utilities within the Environmental Utilities department, is responsible for the treatment of raw water from the South Saskatchewan River as well as the distribution of potable water to the City of Medicine Hat, and some outlying, water customers. The water that we consume is supplied from the South Saskatchewan River and is treated by the City’s Water Treatment Plant. Water samples are taken at the Plant and throughout the distribution system on a regular basis to ensure the highest water quality.
The Water Utility ensures that all treated water meets the rigid safety; quality; monitoring; recording and reporting parameters of Federal, Provincial, water industry and local standards. The Water Utility also plans and implements infrastructure expansions and upgrades to meet planning needs, as well as supports local development objectives.
Mandated by the Water Service Bylaw #2379, both the Environmental Utilities Department and the City of Medicine Hat water customers are expected to adhere to the regulations set forth in the bylaw. The Water Department is also regulated by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP).
