At the City of Medicine Hat, we view and value training and development as keys to the success of our team members and our organizational effectiveness. Therefore, we are committed to the personal growth and development of every employee.

To demonstrate this commitment, we will create, promote access to, and provide encouragement to participate in learning opportunities - learning opportunities that enhance your individual ability to perform your current role, as well as prepare yourself for future opportunities in the organization.

Our employees enjoy the support of their manager to help them work their way towards their career aspirations. Our achievement planning process allows employees to share their goals, aspirations and learning needs with their manager. Together they plan how to develop competencies that will support their goals in alignment with organizational needs.

We can provide financial support to employees pursuing external professional development courses, and/or post-secondary education. We have also created an exceptional in-house line-up of voluntary workshops and programs that are congruent with our corporate values and key objectives for building capacity in our organization.

Some examples of our internal learning options are:

Leadership Development

Personal Leadership Development – this is a 10-day training program set across a six month period for employees at every level in our organization. The City of Medicine Hat has a philosophy of “shared leadership” in order to ensure we “exceed expectation in the value of our services”; leadership is needed and encouraged at all levels of the organization. Topics of this program include Personal Leadership, interpersonal understanding of your own and other’s behaviours, effective communications, managing stress, and using creative approaches to problem solving. This program also assists participants in understanding their work alignment needs, and learning style.

Workgroup Leader Development – this program is designed to augment our Workgroup Leaders roles related to leading and developing others, and builds on many areas of the Personal Leadership program. Topics include the roles and responsibilities of a Workgroup Leader, Teaming by Design making work meaningful (work alignment), constructively communicating work expectations and appreciation, situational leadership and leading work groups through change.
