Rubber Sidewalks Installation

Since 2012 the Municipal Works Department has constructed approximately 325 meters of rubber sidewalk throughout the City.

The use of rubber as an alternative for sidewalk construction is part of a pilot project which will allow City staff to monitor the maintenance and durability of the product over the next few years.  While the method and cost of installation is very similar to that of concrete, it is anticipated that the use of rubber will prevent the formation of cracks, breaks, and trip hazards resulting from tree roots and freeze-thaw cycles.

The environmental benefits of the product are excellent, having been manufactured out of 100% Alberta recycled tires!  As part of this trial project Alberta Recycling Management Authority awarded a $25,000 grant to the City for the use of this recycled rubber product.

The public is encouraged to try the rubber sidewalks at the following locations:

Beside Riverside School - 2 Street NW from 1 Avenue NW to 2 Avenue NW

Heald Park - 3 Avenue NW from 1 Street NW to 2 Street NW

Across from the Police Station - Ash Avenue SE at 2 Street SE

Flats Residential - Washington Avenue SE at Braemer Street SE

We welcome public feedback on these rubber sidewalks.
